Foreign pilots flying in Australia
To fly a glider in Australia:
1. You must join the Gliding Federation of Australia. 1 month membership for international pilots is $106 (approx. 70 euro). This can be purchased through the GFA Shop, on-line via the GFA web site, before you arrive, or can be done as soon as you get here.
2. You must join a gliding club: The gliding club of Victoria (GCV) has cheap short-term membership, or you can buy a membership from any other club. Again, you can do this once you arrive.
3. Apply for an Australian “Glider Pilot Certificate”
You can convert your licence/pilot certificate and medical from your home country to an Australian Glider Pilot Certificate (GPC). There is no cost and you can apply on-line well before you arrive in Australia. Once your application has been processed you will receive an email confirming that the GPC is approved, and this combined with payment of your GFA membership will prove that you are licenced to fly in Australia. You must have this to fly Australian registered gliders or foreign registered gliders.
The on-line application for an Australian GPC can be found on the GFA web page. www.glidingaustralia.org Follow this link and then click on “Member Services”, and then “GPC for foreign pilots”.
4. Annual Flight Review: Australian Regulation requires an Annual Flight Review, whereas many countries accept a review every two years. We accept your flight review but make sure that you complete this in the 12 months prior to the world championships
General information for foreign pilots flying in Australia can be found by copying this address into your internet browser (clicking the link does not always work). http://www.glidingaustralia.org/GFA-Ops ... ilots.html

Importing gliders
Provided your glider has a Certificate of Airworthiness (CoA) issued by a ICAO contracting state, there are no issues with the glider flying in Australia, provided you have the corresponding pilots licence.
If your glider is operating on a Permit to Fly or Experimental Certificate then you will need to get an approval from our Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Please send aircraft details to our Chief Technical Officer, Dennis Stacey at cto@glidingaustralia.org and he will help you to go through this process.

Shipping gliders
Advice and support for shipping glider to Australia is available on our information sheet and we recommend using one of our two Shipping import agents – details on the sheet.
See the “importing gliders info sheet” under documents on our web site. Both of these agents are well experienced and are able to reduce potential problems with customs and quarantine. We strongly recommend using one of these if you are importing gliders to Australia.
You are advised to schedule your gliders/container arrival a minimum of 1 week before you want to go flying.

Glider hire
We expect to have a number of gliders available for hire or swap. We will place details on the web page.

There is a good choice of accommodation available, with many Motels and Hotels in the town, and we are seeking a number of houses for rent. We are expanding the availability of camping on the airfield and will provide details on the web page.

We are expecting a number of days where heights in excess of 10,000 feet / 3000metres will be achievable, with heights over 14,000 feet on some of the better days. In Australia the law says that we must carry Oxygen when flying above 10,000 feet. At technical inspection we will check that your glider is equipped with oxygen.
Oxygen re-filling will be available on site.

Flarm must be fitted for this competition. The European Power Flarm does not work in Australia (a frequency issue we understand) and so you need to ensure that you have a suitable Flarm fitted for technical inspection. All other flarm types will operate normally. Please check that you have the latest update.
